way the desis behave in US. When you meet someone you will be immediately greeted. Thats how things work here. Traditionally back home, I have been trained to avert seeing another person on the road. Greetings!!! u should be kidding me, i am forbidden from even staring at the person.
And if i tend to break the barrier and stare, then i am suspected to be a rowdy or someone ready to pounce at the person. A step further if i greet something like "hello. எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?". The immediate response would be "யார்ட பேசற? லூசா நீனு?" probably will be accompanied by some brutal words and if it is of opposite sex, thats it, i am branded an eve teaser and probably remanded in the nearby police station. But here all the desis tend to change and get adapted to this gesture. It is really wonderful to see them greet every non-desi they pass by and at also at each shop. And the best thing is, if u lock the eyes and greet the non-desi the moment u see, the transaction is near to completion in any shop. But the irony is, the desis tend to exhibit a total home grown behavior when they see another desi. Probably when they see another desi, they feel they are at home and even if the other person greets, it is returned by a cold stare and worse a sharp turnaround leaving the person feeling guilty for greeting.
Only desis can exhibit such two different traits anywhere above the land!!! Long live desi and long live their custom!!! If not all desi, i am really amazed by the Indians here so far. I am yet to see an Indian who greets another total strange Desi whole heartedly......atleast in the place i live.
